Welcome to Smallwood House Hotel, Ambleside, Lake District, Cumbria

Smallwood House Hotel is a family run bed & breakfast, offering quality 4 star accommodation and award winning Cumbrian breakfasts in Ambleside in the heart of the English Lake District.
Being slightly larger than your average Cumbrian B&B, our guest house provides the perfect place to enjoy short breaks or longer holidays in one of our 12 comfortable, individually furnished bedrooms.
Our relaxed and friendly B&B team will help you make the most of your stay, whether you are seeking a romantic getaway, family holiday, activity break or group vacation. Our bed & breakfast tariff features great deals and special offers throughout the year.
In summer, the great outdoors beckons and you can do it all from our hotel doorstep in Ambleside, from climbing the high Lakeland fells or ambling around some low levels walks and waterfalls - on foot or by bike!  How about bell ringing, we have groups come to stay to travel around the district ringing the local Church bells.
We are in the centre of Ambleside, a bustling and vibrant small market town offering a good selection of specialist shops and great quality restaurants, bars and cafes.  Our B&B guests also have use of the luxury spa and swimming pool at a hotel just a few minutes walk away.
Ambleside is the perfect choice for exploring the Lake District and Cumbria.  Leave the car behind and take a bus trip to some of our lovely nearby towns and villages, such as Grasmere, Hawkshead & Keswick.  While you are here explore the nearby homes of famous Lakeland literary figures like William Wordsworth or Beatrix Potter.  From the pier at Waterhead in Ambleside you can take a boat trip or cruise on Windermere to Bowness or Lakeside at the opposite end of the Lake.
Smallwood House Hotel has a private car park and offers complimentary WiFi access for our B&B guests.

Accommodation

We offer 12 en-suite bedrooms which are all decorated and furnished individually to a high standard.  Smallwood House is fully central heated and all our rooms include colour TVs, clock radios and hair dryers, along with a welcome tray for hot drinks.
Our bathrooms are all en-suite and fully tiled with attractive suites. Under-floor heating in the bathrooms mean you can leave your slippers at home, confident that you'll still have cosy toes in the morning.
We have a romantic four poster bedroom as well as spacious family rooms for three people.  Groups can also be accommodated in a mixture of twin and triple bedded rooms.
Our two single rooms are great favourites with some of our regular guests, and are available at no extra supplement.  The morning sun floods these rooms with a warm glow to help you start the day and the view of Wansfell, gives you the incentive to pull on your boots and get out onto the fells.
We use the luxurious Pure Lakes toiletry products throughout the Smallwood House and their hand wash, shower gel and body lotion are so lovely.  Pure Lakes produce these wonderful organic products locally, and they're environmentally friendly too.  If you like these products as much as we do, you can buy some before you head home, and they will probably have been made freshly that week.

 Food & Drink
We appreciate that your breakfast experience is really important and in 2009 we achieved the coveted Breakfast award to accompany our 4 star grading from our Visit England inspector.  The Breakfast Award recognises our use of fresh local produce, our menu range and quality, along with our ability to get it perfectly onto your plate.
Homemade black pudding produced by Claytons in Windermere, is delicious alongside your egg & bacon.  We also offer kipper fillets, fruits & yoghurt along with a continental style breakfast for those with a lighter appetite.  We always keep a selection of vegetarian and gluten free foods in stock and if you any other special food choices please do let us know.
Smallwood House has a drinks license and we have a small selection of wine, spirits and mixers to accompany your meal or just to enjoy in the comfort of your room.  We can also arrange for wine or Champagne to be in your room on arrival.

Packed lunches - £5.00 per person
Our packed lunches are very popular with our guests and can be ordered the night before.  Your choice of sandwich fillings - subject to availability - a slice of our homemade gingerbread, a selection of fruit and a biscuit will see you through the day.  Don't forget to bring your own flask which we'll be happy to fill for you.

The owners made us very welcome when we visited and rested in the lovely quiet lounge at Smallwood House. The central location is great with restaurants and shops on the doorstep. A real bonus in Ambleside is the car park behind the property.
