Appleby
Appleby is probably best known for the Horse Fair which takes place in June but to be honest it gets very busy during the fair and parking is problematic at best. Appleby grew as a market town in the now defunct county of Westmorland in the 11th century and is a pretty village well worth a visit.
Boroughgate is the main street and is a wide fine example as streets go having been described as one of the best in England. At the north end are the cloisters which were built in 1811 and at the south is Appleby Castle.
The Moot Hall dating from 1596 is now the home of the Tourist Information Centre.
Bed And Breakfast : Bongate House : Lovely Georgian B&B.
