Black Combe

Address: Black Combe
Whicham Valley
Cumbria
Description
This walk will take you around three hours. I completed the walk on Sunday 5th October 2008 and enjoyed views from the top of Black Combe of Scafell and Scotland to the north, the Isle of Man to the west, the mountains of Snowdonia to the south and Morecambe Bay to the East.

Directions: Take the A595 coast road signposted Millom, Workington and Whitehaven. When you pass the Millom turn off you are entering the beautiful Whicham Valley. Pass turnoffs on the left for Brockwood Hall, then Cumbrian Heavy Horses. The parking place is about a mile ahead, on the left, under some trees. There is space for about a dozen cars.

Cross the road to the gate opposite to start your walk.
Follow Whitecombe Beck, crossing it after about a mile and continue to Whitcombe Head. A path leads to the top of Black Combe which at 600m offers outstanding views. We descended (steep ground) by passing Elter Peatpot, staying to the right of BlackCombe beck, until we hit the ascent path once more and returned to the car.
