Cumbria Towns and Villages
Visitors have many reasons to visit towns and villages outside of the Lake District National Park. At the south of the county of Cumbria the towns of Ulverston, Dalton in Furness and Barrow in Furness make up the Furness Peninsula much of which was originally controlled by Furness Abbey until the dissolution of the monasteries.
Further east lie towns such as Grange Over Sands and villages including Cartmel, famed for its Priory and Flookburgh where most of the Morecambe Bay shrimping industry was based.
Head up the west coast of Cumbria to discover the major towns of Workington and Whitehaven, the latter of which which saw the import of spices and rum into its port which were incorporated into dishes such as Cumberland Rum Nickie. The Rum Story Museum in Whitehaven documents the rum trade and is well worth a visit.
