Grange Over Sands
Grange Over Sands is an Edwardian coastal resort within striking distance of the lakes but also on the shores of the ever changing Morecambe Bay. Its history is very much influenced by the arrival of the Furness railway when it changed from a small fishing village into a resort town with some impressive large hotels built specially for the holidaymakers. The town has a pedestrian only promenade with ornamental gardens and a duck pond. Shopping is a pleasure in the shops with their Edwardian facades and there are cafes to while away the hours serving locally produced food.
Nearby Villages High And Low Newton The
villages are essentially one village really and until recently they
were astride a dangerous stretch of the A590 on the road to Newby
Bridge. Thankfully they have now been bypassed and are a real joy to visit with some splendid walks over Cartmel Fell with great views. The hub of the village is the Crown At High Newton a lovely pub which we visited recently. It is a Freehold pub with a wide selection of ales and fine food. After a lunch at the Crown you should visit Yew Tree Barn
which is a treasure trove of architectural salvage, Cumbrian artisan
work including jewellery, furniture restoration and photography plus a
gallery full of arts and crafts of which many are Cumbrian made. There
is also the Hat Trick Cafe serving a great selection of coffees, teas
and snacks.
