Lake District Customs
The Lake District has its own heritage of customs and even its own dialect! Here are a few of our examples:
Cumberland Wrestling A sport mainly practised by farm workers and has an ancient heritage with possible viking/norse connections. Cumberland wrestling can still be seen at the various agricultural shows around the county.Once the bout starts if any part of a wrestler's body touches the ground aside from his feet then he loses.Contact is by backhold and its mainly about strength coupled with agility.
Gurning Gurning is basically pulling a face as grotesque as possible whilst putting your head through a horses halter. The Gurning Championship is held annually in Egremont West Cumbria as part of the Egremont Crab Fair.
