Description
Standing on the shore of Lake Windermere, England's largest lake, the historic Macdonald Old England Hotel and Spa is an ideal base for exploring the Lake District National Park.
Our award-winning Number 23 Church Street Restaurant offers unrivalled views over mature lawns to the lake, where you can hire private jetties and moorings. Four flexible business suites and teambuilding opportunities make the Old England a natural favourite as your next meeting or conference venue, while achieving a work-life balance is effortless at our luxury hotel spa. Enquire about exclusive use for weddings and conferences, and have the hotel all to yourself!
Accommodation
Whether you're working, resting or simply enjoying yourself in the Lake District, the Macdonald Old England Hotel rooms' plush soft furnishings in rich natural colours will enhance your stay. Comfortable beds, luxury en-suite bathrooms and flat screen TVs are standard in every room.
Upgrade to an Executive Room for panoramic views, make the most of the extra space in a Feature Room or admire Lake Windermere from the balcony of your Junior Suite. For a special occasion, ask about our Four Poster room. Accessible and Family Rooms are available on request.
Classic Rooms
Choose a Macdonald Old England hotel Classic Room for comfort and luxury. Catch up on emails and work at the desk, or watch a film on the flat screen TV before taking a bath or shower and settling into your big comfortable bed for a sound night’s sleep.
Executive Rooms
Stretch out in a spacious Lake View Executive Room in the original building and admire stunning views of the lake from the large picture windows or watch a movie on the flat screen TV. A relaxing bath or power shower will soothe away tension while a generous work area makes planning for the next day easy. Family rooms with bunk beds are also available.
Feature Rooms
Our spacious Feature Rooms with lake views have all been recently refurbished. Settle in with a coffee and watch the lake cruises sail by, or sink into a bubble bath, wrap up in a bathrobe and enjoy your favourite TV programme on the flat screen TV. For a special occasion, book our Four Poster Feature Room.
Suites
Make yourself at home in a roomy and inviting suite at the Macdonald Old England Hotel and Spa. Admire unrivalled views of Lake Windermere from your Junior Suite or Balcony Room or upgrade to a Feature Suite with a separate living room, ideal if you prefer to dine in.
Food and Drink
It's not just food at the Macdonald Old England Hotel, it's a passion! Macdonald Hotels use only the finest seasonal ingredients and source the best produce available - local and organic where possible - so you can expect free range eggs, corn-fed poultry, grass-fed beef and wild white fish in all our hotel restaurants.
Our talented Executive Head Chef Nick Martin and his team are true professionals, blending stringent quality standards with flair and imagination. The result? Classic dishes bursting with fresh flavours.
23 Church Street Restaurant
Known as the 'restaurant on the lake', our 2 AA Rosette Number 23 Church Street Restaurant takes hotel dining to a whole new level. Full-length windows bring the outside inside, so you can order a glass of fine wine and browse the menu as you gaze across the ever-changing Lake Windermere.
Terrace Coffee Lounge
The colonial-style Coffee Lounge at the Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa is the perfect place to enjoy light refreshments in a peaceful, refined atmosphere. Pick up a book or newspaper, settle into a comfortable sofa and admire views of the lake as you listen to soft background music
Relaxation at Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa, Windermere
Take a breather from your busy schedule and experience some of the best spa and leisure facilities in the Lake District at the Macdonald Old England Hotel and Spa. Stay in shape on the latest Technogym equipment and take a dip in the warm waters of the 20 metre hotel pool with views over Lake Windermere, before luxuriating in the thermal suite. Or climb the spiral staircase to one of our 8 treatment rooms and prepare for complete relaxation in the hands of our skilled spa therapists.
For total indulgence, why not book one of our Relaxation Breaks and enjoy a whole menu of pampering spa treatments in our single and double treatment rooms? Ideal for hen parties, girly weekends or special occasions, packages can be tailored to suit you.
Leisure
Swim a few laps before breakfast in the Old England's heated indoor hotel pool, as you admire views over the private terrace and Lake Windermere beyond. Our air-conditioned, daylit Technogym is great for a workout and afterwards you can bask in the sauna and aroma steam room or enjoy a fragrance shower before refreshing with a handful of ice!
Peace and serenity wash over you when you step into the candlelit hush of The Spa at Old England. 8 tranquil treatment rooms, a subdued relaxation room and a private lounge for champagne lunches make The Spa a natural inner sanctuary.

Discover the lakes was given a full and extensive tour of the hotel and was greatly impressed. Gone is the rather tired decor of years ago to be replaced by rather grand and luxurious fabrics and appointments. The rooms can't fail to impress particularly the ones with sweeping lake views and the spa facilities are quite literally second to none. The restaurant is lovely and there are many quiet corners in lounges and bars for weary travellers.
Quiet professional staff from the welcoming concierge to the reception desk and beyond plus a plethora of awards should put this hotel on your "must stay" list.
