Moderate Walks in The Lake District

In this section you'll find walks that involve more distance than our short / easy walks section, they are also more physically demanding. As greater altitude is often involved, you will need a map and compass, and suitable clothing and footwear. You should also be relatively fit, and comfortable walking on uneven ground.

Black Combe
This walk will take you around three hours. I completed the walk on Sunday 5th October 2008 and enjoyed views from the top of Black Combe of Scafell and Scotland to the north, the Isle of Man to the west, the mountains of Snowdonia to the south and Morecambe Bay to the East.   Directions: Take the A595 coast road signposted Millom, Workington and Whitehaven. Time: Around 45 minutes to an hour to Stickle Tarn, and 30 - 45 minutes to descend. Add another 2 hour 30 mins if you want to do the circular route via harrison Stickle and Dungeon Ghyll. Start from National Trust car park next to The Stickle Barn in Great Langdale. This is a popular area and a very popular walk so arrive early to avoid parking difficulties.
