For you competitive types out there, or just to give yourself a focus, we list races, marathons, and other competitive events in the lake district. Many of these events raise money for good causes via sponsorship.

24 Peaks Challenge
24 Peaks Challenge
A charity fund raising event, a mountain marathon, and the ultimate team building experience. The 24 peaks challenge takes place in the lake district on the 19th and 20th july 2008. The challenge is to scale 24 peaks over 2,400 feet in 24 hours. This is a team event, organised, and in aid of the charity Seafarers UK, Britains leading charity for the maritime community. Each team is asked to raise at least £5,000. Duddon Valley Fell Races
Duddon Valley Fell Races
The Duddon Valley Fell Races in 2008 will be held on Saturday 31st May. There are two races: The Long Duddon covers 20 miles and takes in Harter, Hardknott, Little Stand, Swirl How, Dow Cragg, White Pike and Caw and involves 6,000 feet of ascent. The Short Duddon covers 11 miles over Dow Cragg and Caw, and involves 3,000 feet of ascent. Further details are available from the website above.   ... more

Helvellyn Triathlon
The Helvellyn Triathlon takes place on Sunday September 7th 2008. If running up and down mountains alone, just isn't enough for you, how about a 1 mile swim in Ullswater, followed by followed by a 38 mile bike ride which includes Kirkstone Pass, and to finish off a 9 mile run up Helvellyn. The Brathay Windermere Marathon
The Brathay Windermere Marathon
The Windermere marathon is organised by the people at Brathay Hall and is run in conjunction with their open day. Entry to the open day costs £5 per car. The most scenic marathon in the UK, covering a distance of 26.2 miles. Starting and finishing at Brathay Hall, the marathon takes a anticlockwise route around the lake via Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, Bowness on Windermere and Ambleside.   Entry Details: Entry forms can be downloaded from the website listed above. The Coniston Fell Race
The Coniston Fell Race
The Coniston Fell Race covers 9 miles and 3,500 feet of ascent. Runners set start from Coniston Village Institute, ascend Wetherlam, cross the ridge to Swirl How and Coniston Old Man, then back to the stary point. It is run under FRA regulations, over 18 years old only. It is held on the Saturday of the first May Day weekend, and the date for 2008 is Saturday May 3rd.
