Ravenglass

Ravenglass can be found on the west coast of Cumbria south of Seascale and round the corner from Muncaster Castle, home of "Tom Fool" and the Duff Pennington family.
The village is the only coastal habitation that is within the national park.

The village was originally a Roman naval base and the remains of a Roman bath house are to be found in the village.
Ravenglass was primarily a fishing village in the 18th Century and the harbour was also used for smuggling tobacco, French Brandy and other goods from the Isle Of Man.
The village has a main street leading down to the estuary and a fine hotel The Pennington mid way down.

The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway operates from the village and is one of the most popular attractions in western Lakeland.
You can stop off at one of the five stations en-route, to take in some excellent walks and scenery.
The railway is a narrow-gauge with miniature steam locos and carriages.
If you are lucky you may see a steam train excursion on the main line which runs through the village.

The sand dunes around Ravenglass and the beach are nature reserves where you can do some birdwatching or you can just admire the views.
Ravenglass is a good base for exploring the Cumbrian coast and is close to Wastwater one of the most dramatic of lakes with its slate screes and a lovely pub "The Screes" with excellent food.
