Scrambling in the Lake District
Scrambling describes the ascent of rock which is less difficult than the easiest rock climb, but more difficult than walking on steep ground. What really defines scrambling is that you will need to use your hands to hold onto the rock, for balance, and to pull upwards.
Established scrambles vary in grade from Grade 1 - classed as easy, to grade 4 which is a serious undertaking involving the use of ropes and other rock climbing equipment.
If you like your pleasures wet, ghyll scrambling might be for you. Involving following the course of streams, rivers, and waterfalls uphill, the water adds an obvious difficulty.
In winter, if you're lucky, even easy scrambles can become full on graded ice climbs.
Scrambling is potentially one of the most dangerous outdoor sports, so either try it with someone who is experienced, or get some tuition.
