Skiing in the Lake District

Skiing in the Lakes?

If the conditions are right and you don't mind a long walk in, you can enjoy a little bit of alpine skiing right here in the lake district. In fact there are a couple of places in Cumbria where the dedicated can get a downhill fix, both venues are listed here.

Also included are details for Kendal Ski Club who have an excellent dry ski slope and lodge.

The only dry ski slope in the lake district Kendal ski clubs slope is 80 metre long x 35m wide. The lodge deals with bookings, memberships and ski hire. I had my first taste of skiing at Kendal. Back in those days, they used a hard white platsic material for the artificial slope. This encouraged good skiing simply because if you fell over it would remove several layers of skin. I can happily report that the material currently used is much kinder....... more

Raise - Helvellyn Range
With a top station at 2720 feet and a piste with a vertical drop of 340 feet, raise is the place to be if you want to ski in the lake district. Operated by the lake District Ski Club (you must become a member to use the tow) a single button lift provides access to seven runs on fairly steep terrain. Forget the overpriced Chill Factor in Manchester, there's real skiing to be had in the Lake District. Ok, Swinhope Moor isn't within the Lake District National Park boundary, in fact it's just outside the Cumbria county boudary, but you should be able to get there within 2 hours from anywhere in the lakes. Less than an hours drive from the Penrith junction on the M6, Swinhope Moor is run by the Weardale Ski Club. two linked Pommas take you 835m up the hill from where the vertical drop...... more
Yad Moss - Cumbrian Pennines
Ok it's not in the lake district, but it's not much of a drive and we wanted to keep the skiing in one place. Yad Moss has benefitted from lottery funding and the facilities have been upgraded. Not only is there a 560 metre Poma, there's also a day loge and ticket office, and the piste is maintained using two piste bashers. Operated by the Carlisle Ski Club, please see their website for further information.    ... more
