Description
Forget the overpriced Chill Factor in Manchester, there's real skiing to be had in the Lake District. Ok, Swinhope Moor isn't within the Lake District National Park boundary, in fact it's just outside the Cumbria county boudary, but you should be able to get there within 2 hours from anywhere in the lakes. Less than an hours drive from the Penrith junction on the M6, Swinhope Moor is run by the Weardale Ski Club. two linked Pommas take you 835m up the hill from where the vertical drop is 170m.

I thoroughly enjoyed a days skiing there on December 7th 2008. Conditions weren't great as it was quite misty but that didn't detract from the experience of proper skiing in England. The piste was a little thin in places with grass showing through, but those patches are easily avoided or can be skied over. Left around 3.30pm, about 30 mins before the lifts shut and had a fantastic finish to the day as we found we could ski back to the car.
