The Newby Bridge Hotel was originally known as the Newby Bridge Mansion. It was built in 1793 by James Machel, whose family had been prominent in the area since the 12th Century when Ulf the Machel was the local laird. Newby Bridge Mansion was of the first great houses to be built on the shores of Lake Windermere. The Machels were friendly with William Wordsworth and copies of correspondence with the great poet are displayed at the hotel, including a poem by Wordsworth "To Lizzie" which is dedicated to one of the Machel children. The literary connection has continued through the years, as Arthur Ransome, author of Swallows and Amazons was also a frequent visitor to the hotel. Relax in our comfortable bedrooms All the bedrooms at the Newby Bridge Hotel offer: En-suite bathroom or jacuzzi, Hospitality tray, Remote control TV with digital channels and radio, Hairdryer and trouser press. Comfortable settees, writing desks, irons and ironing boards may also be found in most rooms. Children are welcome and we have several Family Suites specially designed for parents with children. Dogs are welcome provided they are accompanied by well behaved owners! You deserve a little luxury Our leisure facilities include an indoor pool, ten person ‘tylo’ steam room, spa pool and gym. The facilities are exclusive to hotel guests and are not open to the public. Newby Bridge Hotel has its own mooring on Lake Windermere and hotel residents may fish from here. For the less energetic, the hotel’s Mediterranean gardens and terraces provide a tranquil refuge. REAL FOOD Dining at the Newby Bridge Hotel is a real pleasure. Our menu changes daily and offers a wide choice, using locally grown fresh produce whenever possible, much of it from our own Victorian kitchen garden. We offer vegetarian options and have a special children's menu. The hotel Dining Room retains its original oak panels and overlooks the Mediterranean gardens. Hi-Life Diners Club Cards are welcome in our Garden view Restaurant and entitle the holder to a "2 for 1" discount on a 3 course Table d'hôte meal. We have our own kitchen garden, which supplies as much quality fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs as we can, all grown using organic principles.
