The Ultimate Lake District Horse Riding Experience !

Farm Rides, Day Rides to the Beach, Half / Full Day Fell Rides and Tuition

Please phone Annie directly with enquiries on 07769 588565 – she has problems with her email. Tell her you found her on Discover The Lakes

Cumbrian Heavy Horses are based in the Whicham Valley which lies between the Western border of the Lake District National Park and the Irish Sea. A passion and enthusiasm for heavy horses is obvious from the outset.

The Discover the Lakes team recently visited the centre and were bowled over by Annie and Tim’s enthusiasm for the horses and their passion for providing visitors with a day to remember.

Just watching the Clydesdales and Shires grazing in the fields or being prepared in the stables was a thrill in itself and the horses possess a grandeur all of their own.

Riding Options

Cumbrian Heavy Horses offer a horse riding or trail riding experience of a lifetime. All horse riding is on magnificent Clydesdales and Shires with an element of tuition incorporated in every ride.

Farm Rides

This ride is run in several ways, either as a beginner/novice experience, a mixed abiltity group, or as a fast ride for experienced riders. The ride is through local farmland comprising of fields, tracks and stream crossings, all with the fantastic Whicham valley views. We ask on booking to ensure you do get the type of ride you want!

Beach Rides

This ride is suitable for more experienced riders/groups who are able to walk, trot and canter in full control of their horse!. The ride takes you from our Chappells Farm Base, along the Whicham Valley, and on to the nearby Irish Sea Coastline which offers miles of sand and sea for you to enjoy.
Riders need to be comfortable with canter and controlling a horse in open spaces. We plan this ride around the daily tides so please ring in advance. We suggest bringing good clothing, packed lunch and light refreshments.

Full day and half day Fell Rides

A half or full day ride, suitable for more experienced riders/groups who are able to walk, trot and canter. Taking in local Lakeland trails it offers a fantastic chance to see all the local scenery and views which, from the top of White or Black Combe, can include the Blackpool Tower, the Isle of Man and Wales.

These rides are pre-planned so we ask you give warning of your desired booking date. Again we suggest bringing good clothing, packed lunch and light refreshments.

Gertie’s Cafe

If your partner is out on a ride why not come and have a cuppa in our cafe?

We have Rijo coffee and snacks available.
