Hawkshead Brewery is not in Hawkshead any longer, though it is still one of the best places to get our beer – in 3 of the 4 pubs in the village and in Near Sawrey at the other end of Esthwaite Water.
The brewery grew so fast that in 2006 we had to move across the lake (Windermere, that is) to Staveley, at the foot of the Kentmere Valley.
Hawkshead Brewery is now in Mill Yard, Staveley, beside the River Kent, where we installed a new brewery, tailor made by Moeschle (UK) Ltd.
The Beer Hall
The Beer Hall is open 7 days a week and is a showcase for Hawkshead beers, in cask, keg and bottle.
It has a Cask Marque award for serving “the perfect pint,” and is in all the best pub guides including: The Good Beer Guide; The Good Pub Guide; Sawday’s Special Places to Eat & Drink; Great British Pubs.
The Beer Hall is light and airy, with plenty of space spread over two floors, a long bar made for leaning on, and sofas for flopping into.
Windows everywhere let you see into the brewery and if you want to get even closer take a brewery tour.
Often at weekends there is live music in the main bar.
Opening Hours
The Beer Hall is open from 12 noon, 7 days a week. Opening hours can be found by clicking here .
The Beers
We brew all sorts: thirst quenching session beers; big hopped modern pale ales; IPAs; malty red ale; lager; deep dark stout and beer it is hard to classify.
We use Maris Otter malted barley, luscious new world hops and traditional English ones.
We use fruit and spices.
We age in wood.

Food
The kitchen was opened in 2010, with the help of our consultant chef, Steven Doherty (formerly Albert Roux’s Head Chef at Le Gavroche.)
We offer down-to-earth, hearty, classic food – tapas (small portions designed to complement the beer) or main meals.
We encourage long lunch, by serving food until at least 3pm (6pm on Sunday.) On Friday and Saturday we serve food all the way until 8.30pm. The menu is ever-changing and there is usually a selection of around 12-14 tapas to choose from. They come within minutes so you can either nibble or build a meal with several tapas dishes at once.
There are also main dishes, generally between £7 and £12, and every Sunday we serve a traditional roast with all the trimmings.

Beer Festivals
We have two Beer Festivals a year. A Spring and Summer Festival, with over 50 beers, all served on hand pulls from our cellars. The beers we serve at these events are generally SIBA champions. In the summer we run an outside bar in a marquee with live music. For information on upcoming festivals and events please check our “Whats on” page HERE
Brewery Tours
We run scheduled tours of the brewery three times a week; Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 2pm, allowing you to enjoy lunch in The Beer Hall beforehand should you so wish.
We can also arrange tours for groups of 10-20 at other times (Monday – Friday during The Beer Hall opening hours) by prior arrangement.
The cost of a brewery tour is £6.50 per person and includes either a pint or two halves at the end of the tour. The tour includes a short film and lasts around 45 minutes.
To pre-book a place on a scheduled tour or to enquire about booking a group tour please call 01539 825260

Review
Being partial to a drop of real ale we can confirm that Hawkshead Brwery ales are some of the finest in Britain let alone the Lake District and the Staveley Beer Hall is a good place to try them and learn a bit more about brewing while you are there.
